Preview: Zelos Eagle

Last week, Zelos Watches announced the Eagle, an automatic pilot's watch with a multi-part case and a Miyota 9015 movement. Inspired by jet engines, the Eagle incorporates several of the company's distinctive design cues, creating a unique watch with a strong brand identity. 

The case is 42mm wide, 16mm thick, and features cut-away sides and multiple surface finishes. It harkens back to the Helmsman, Zelos' first model, but the Eagle achieves the effect with a two part case consisting of an outer frame fitted over a central barrel. I have seen this element used on other watches (like the Seiko SUN019) and the result is deep and clearly defined. The cut out extends into the steeply angled lugs, creating a dramatic framework that is further enchanced by a combination of brushed and blasted finishes. It is available in DLC black stainless steel or a bronze outer case surrounding a DLC barrel.  

On the back side, the Eagle continues its jet theme with a turbine backplate offering just glimpses of the movement within. This is another Zelos signature element used on both the Cosmos and the Chroma Skeleton. All this decoration does not come at the expense of function. The Eagle has a 4mm thick domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and is water resistant to 200m. The watch will come with two rugged 22mm straps: one canvas and one leather. 

The dial is a familar A-type flieger, but in Zelos fashion, it is not as simple as that. The upper ring is sandblasted with cutaway markers, and the lower layer is brushed. Dials are black with SuperLuminova under the markers: white BWG9 on the E-1A, grey C1 on the E-1B, and vintage C1 for the bronze E-1C.
